Protein is the essential part of a balanced diet, but sometimes it comes with loads of fat and calories than desired. There are a variety of lean animal protein and plant based proteins which helps to maintain the requirements. Protein has an essential role in the body, including building and maintaining muscles, tissues and regulating several body functions. Apart from these functions, protein also provides satiety and helps in weight management. 

Examples of lean proteins

  1. White fleshed fish: Halibut, tilapia, pollock, flounder, cod, haddock etc.
  2. Skinless white meat poultry: White meat of poultry includes breasts, breast tenders, and wings. 
  3. Lean beef: Sirloin steaks, tenderloin steaks, round roast and round steaks are examples of lean parts of beef.
  4. Pork loin: The key words for lean pork are “loin” and “chop”. 
  5. Frozen shrimp: Frozen and unbreaded shrimp are good examples of lean protein.
  6. Egg whites: Although the whole egg is a part of a heart healthy diet, if you desire for a lighter option, egg white is good.
  7. Low fat milk: low fat milk contains good amounts of lean protein. 
  8. Low fat cottage cheese: Cottage cheese is a low fat high protein food.
  9. Plain Greek yogurt: It is a low calorie, low fat, and high protein option.
  10. Peas, lentils, and beans: They are also categorized as legumes. They are low in fat, and high in protein and fiber. 
  11.  Lite tofu: It comes in different textures and is a very good protein option when you want to avoid animal protein.
  12. Unsweetened powdered peanut butter: It is a slimmed option of peanut butter.
