The carbs present in watermelon are mainly simple sugars and a very little amount of fiber. The glycemic index of watermelon is high, that means it can raise the blood sugar levels after consumption, but it's carbs content is so low that it should not have a major effect on blood sugar levels. Watermelons are considered high in FODMAP, so eating too much of it can cause digestive problems in some people. Watermelons are a rich source of vitamin C and also contain several other vitamins and minerals including potassium, copper, vitamin B5, and vitamin A (from beta carotene) in fair amounts. When compared to other fruits, watermelon is a poor source of antioxidants. However, it is rich in amino acid citrulline and antioxidant lycopene. After consumption, citrulline is transformed into essential amino acid arginine.

High blood pressure is the most common cause for chronic illness and premature death. Both the amino acids, citrulline and arginine are known to aid the production of nitric oxide in the body. Nitric oxide causes the tiny muscles around the blood vessels to relax and dilate leading to a reduction in blood pressure

According to some studies, insulin resistance is lowered by the intake of watermelon juice and arginine intake. It is also shown in some studies that watermelon consumption reduces muscle soreness followed by strenuous exercises. Although well tolerated by most people, watermelon can cause allergic reactions in some people, including itchy mouth and throat as well as swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue, throat, and/or ears. Being a high FODMAP food, watermelon can also cause digestive issues like bloating in some people.
