Symptoms of overactive bladder and prostate problems


Overactive bladder (OAB) and prostate problems are two different conditions. But both of them cause frequent and sudden urges to urinate in men. This is very annoying and embarrassing but the good thing is that it can be treated.  There are varieties of exercises that can help reduce the symptoms of OAB and prostate problems, in addition to medical remedies.

The prostate surrounds the urethra, which carries urine from the bladder. The size of the prostate is about a walnut.


The prostate enlarges with age. This puts pressure on the urethra of men. An enlarged prostate is also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). BPH leads to an urge to urinate frequently or the feeling that you may still have to go after you’ve finished urinating.
 

What causes overactive bladder 


When the muscles that control the bladder no longer work properly, OAB occurs. This causes an urge to urinate more often.
Taking too much fluid especially caffeinated beverages, alcohol, and citrus juice- can aggravate the symptoms. Being obese also puts pressure on the bladder. Sometimes, few serious neurological conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis (MS) also give rise to OAB.

Some factors like aging or prostate cancer treatment make the muscles surrounding the bladder weak. Various types of exercises can help men suffering from prostate problems or OAB. Kegel exercises can strengthen and train your pelvic floor muscles to help control urination.


Some exercises like walking, jogging, swimming, and tennis also help to reveal the symptoms. These and other aerobic exercises can help you maintain a healthy weight.

What are Kegel exercises?


Kegel exercises are designed to strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor.
They’re often recommended for women after childbirth, But certain other conditions like diabetes, OAB, or prostate surgery can also weaken the muscles in the pelvic floor.


Best time to do Kegel exercise?


Kegel exercises can be done at almost any time. It is important to note Kegel exercises don’t require special equipment. But daily practice and concentrations on steps are key to get the exercises just right.
 

Steps in Kegel exercises


At first, you have to find your pelvic floor muscles. Start urinating, after a few seconds stop yourself from urinating. Concentrate on your muscles. The muscles you used to do so are your pelvic floor muscles. For doing the Kegel exercise, first, empty your bladder. Lie on the floor with your knees bent and apart. Tighten your pelvic floor muscles for 3 seconds and then relax them for 3 seconds. Repeat the same a few times. Concentrate only on your pelvic floor muscles. Very soon you will be able to do this exercise while standing or sitting.

Regular exercise has several health benefits. It keeps your heart and muscles healthy and also keeps control of your weight.

If you are not able to do the Kegel exercise properly, consult your doctor. He will make you learn how to isolate the key muscles. Lifestyle modifications and medications can be helpful in this. If the symptoms persist, such as frequent urges to urinate, consult a doctor about other steps to be taken. These problems can be annoying and embarrassing. But if you make honest steps to get rid of these symptoms, your quality of life can be better.
